Parking Survey

The Castletown Town Commissioners are seeking feedback to assist with the formulation of a parking strategy.

Parking in Castletown is an emotive subject and Castletown Town Commissioners (CTC) recognise that parking provision is an essential part of a balanced transport network meeting accessibility needs. Car parking competes for space on and off street with differing demands, such as retail space, office space, on-street loading, pedestrians and Bus Stops. It is therefore necessary to manage parking within a strategy of balancing needs.

There is presently significant over demand for parking in the Chapel Lane (Grammar School) Car Park, whilst parking at other periphery car parks are not in demand. Consideration is being given to addressing this imbalance and to promote the use of walking or cycling for short trips in line with the governments active travel strategy.

Monitoring of CTC car parks shows that motorists regularly exceed the 2hr limit, or reset time discs at the end of the 2hr parking window, despite there being availability of unrestricted on street parking a short walk away.

Public take up of the scheme to refund 1hr of parking charges in the pay and Display Car Park has been negligible.

This Survey is intended ascertain the thoughts of the public with regard to the current off street parking provision in the town and how this provision should be designated, and funded into the future.
